And hence, from clothing & fashion accessories to home decor & stationery items, everything that is bred under Sumaaya’s shade comes out as a distinct voice than an echo.
What is Sumaaya?
Sumaaya is a contemporary brand that resonates with the idea of bringing the roots of culture back to life. From their range of apparel to the stationery items they make, each piece is not just handmade but holds the essence of pure genuineness. They hire real artisans to do handiwork on the fabrics, while they design the apparel in a way that they not only make statements but also stand as pillions of comfort. The diaries they design comprise of handmade papers and cover, sewn together with thread. Even the shoes they make are completely made by human hands. From clothing & fashion accessories to home decor & stationery items, everything that is bred under Sumaaya’s shade comes out as a distinct voice than an echo. Their fresh perception and concept-oriented product range makes the beauty of individualism shine out.
What’s the Inside Story?
Someone rightly said that – ‘Art does not reproduce what we see. It makes us see.’ The journey of Sumaaya started on a similar note, when a bunch of students pursuing their Bachelor’s degree in various fields of study, decided to try a small gig for some extra bucks. What they started as a simple reselling of knick-knacks soon took the shape of a satirical clothing & accessories brand that created chic products out of purely ethnic raw materials, processes and handiwork. ‘Sumaaya’ as a Sanskrit word literally means something well-shaped with a thoughtful plan. With the same pensiveness, Bansri Chanchapara (Sculptor), Darshan Maiwala (Textile engineer), Diya Patel (Graphic designer) and Nirali Champaneria (Painter) led Sumaaya with their vividly distinct skill sets and visions to become a homegrown brand that it is today.
What are its Showstopper Products?
Their range of modern yet traditional products includes apparels for both men & women, leather footwear, sketchbooks/diaries, accessories and some interesting home decor products. With a fresh taste in Boho style, they make jewellery pieces from bronze and copper. Another range of their stunning jewellery is carved out of wood and incorporates the details of real miniature paintings. They use aboriginal embroidery not only on clothes but footwear, diaries and what not. One of their original product also includes patina jewellery, which is an old process of bringing to life sculptors and wooden artifacts with a rustic gleam. They create an array of quirky decor items by sculpting papers and ceramic. To say the least, you cannot experience their eccentric sense of style until you see their work for yourself.
In the span of mere two years, Sumaaya has already marked its presence across Mumbai, Ahmedabad & Surat at 11 exhibitions and counting. As a brand, team Sumaaya aspires to own a store for themselves where each patron can take home a token of handmade love from them. They zealously await the day when Sumaaya’s products will speak for themselves and before looking at their trademark people would recognize their brand.
